If you need to take the IELTS, you might be wondering if an IELTS preparation course is necessary. The short answer is: it depends.
If you are confident with your English and using it in an academic context, my recommendation is that you do a couple of mock tests to get familiar with the test format and know what to expect. This should be enough for you and there is no need to take a course unless you want to boost your confidence.
However, if you feel lost in an academic context or feel that your English level is not high enough to get the score that you need, then it might be a good idea to take a preparation course. There are lots of courses out there, so I’ll give you some tips on what to look for.
- Avoid courses that focus on mock tests and exam strategies only. These can be useful if your English is already advanced, but they won’t do much to improve your score otherwise. Mock tests help us get familiar with the test and exam strategies will help you improve your timing and confidence during the test. However, if you need to improve your score, you will need to work on your English skills.
- Look for courses that aim to work on your English skills. It may not look like you are working on IELTS all the time but working on your language skills will help you get a higher IELTS score. Courses that offer lots of English practice, including speaking, reading, listening and writing, are great for improving your language skills and that will help you with the IELTS. Remember: IELTS is an English test, to do better, you will need to have better English.
- Avoid courses that claim not to teach grammar. Grammar is an essential tool for you to improve your English faster and get a higher score in the test. Also, remember that grammar is part of the marking criteria for the writing and speaking parts of the IELTS.
- If possible, look for a course that’s enjoyable. There is a myth among teachers that IELTS preparation is necessarily boring, and the motivation needs to come from the students wanting a higher score. However, it is possible to do enjoyable lessons, have fun in class and still improve your score for the IELTS. In fact, having fun while you learn can make you learn faster and more effectively, as it activates all the right parts of your brain. Fun IELTS preparation courses are more difficult to find, but if you can find one, I highly recommend it.
I hope these tips will help you find the right course for you. Don’t forget we have a free IELTS preparation mini course that you can sign up for now. It’s called SMASH IELTS, click the link to find it.
